Paver Installation in South Florida
Driveways, patios, pool decks and walkways. The visible half is the paver you choose; the half that decides how it looks in ten years is underneath it.
Most paver problems are base problems
When a paver surface fails, it rarely fails because of the paver. It sinks in patches, spreads at the edges, or develops a low spot that holds water after every storm — and the cause is nearly always what was done, or not done, before a single unit was laid.
That is the unglamorous truth of this trade. Depth of excavation, the aggregate used, whether it was compacted in layers or all at once, where water is directed, and whether the perimeter is properly restrained: these decide the outcome. The paver on top is a finish.

Applications
Four surfaces, four different problems
The same material behaves differently depending on what crosses it, what it gets wet with, and who walks on it barefoot. These are not interchangeable specifications.
Driveway pavers
The heaviest-loaded surface on the property, and the only one where vehicles apply twisting force as they turn. That drives a deeper compacted base than a patio needs, thicker units rated for vehicular use, and interlocking patterns that transfer load between pavers rather than letting each one work alone. Edge restraint matters most here, because a driveway edge is where spreading starts.
Patio pavers
Lighter loads, so the specification opens up considerably — larger formats, thinner units and more pattern freedom all become viable. The decisions shift to comfort and appearance: how the surface reads from indoors, whether it stays walkable in bare feet, and how it meets the threshold and the lawn without creating a trip or a puddle.
Pool deck pavers
The most demanding of the four. The surface is walked on wet and barefoot, exposed to chlorine or salt-system water, and sits in full sun for most of the day. Slip resistance when wet, how hot the material gets underfoot, and the coping detail at the water's edge take priority over everything else. Drainage has to move water away from the pool surround rather than let it pond at the edge.
Walkways and side returns
Narrow, often overlooked, and frequently the part that dates a property. Width matters more than people expect — a path two people cannot pass on gets walked around, wearing a track into the lawn beside it. Falls need to shed water away from the house wall rather than towards it, and the transition where a path meets a driveway or patio is where levels most often go wrong.
Below the surface
Base preparation and drainage
The part of the job you will never see, photograph or show anyone — and the only part that determines whether the surface still sits flat years from now.
The layers, and what each one does
Excavation. The area is dug out to a depth set by what the surface has to carry. A driveway is excavated deeper than a patio for the same reason a road is deeper than a footpath. Cutting this depth to save time is the single most common way a paver job is compromised.
Compacted sub-base. Crushed aggregate laid and compacted in layers — not dumped to full depth and rolled once. Compacting in lifts is what produces a uniformly dense platform; compacting in one pass leaves the lower material loose, and it consolidates later under load, which is what a sunken patch actually is.
Bedding layer. A thin, screeded layer the pavers are set into. Its job is to accommodate the small dimensional variation between units, not to make up for an uneven base beneath it. A thick bedding layer used to correct a bad sub-base is a defect waiting to appear.
Edge restraint. The perimeter has to be held. Without restraint the outer courses migrate outward under use, joints open, and the movement works inward from the edge. This is why a surface can look fine in the middle and fail at its boundary.
Jointing. Sand swept into the joints locks the units against each other so the surface behaves as one interlocked field rather than a collection of loose pieces.
Where water goes
South Florida rain does not arrive gently. It comes in volume, and a surface that has not been designed to shed it will find its own answer — usually a low spot that ponds, or a fall that quietly directs water toward the house.
Falls are set so water moves away from the building and toward somewhere it can go. Where a surface meets turf, a pool surround or another material, the finished levels have to agree, since that junction is where water collects if the two were planned separately.
Permeable paving systems, which let water pass through the joints into a drainage layer below rather than running off the surface, are worth discussing where site conditions suit them. Whether they suit yours depends on the ground beneath and what the surface has to carry.
Questions worth asking any paver contractor
How deep are you excavating, and does that change between the driveway and the patio? Is the sub-base compacted in layers, and how many? What edge restraint are you using? Where is water going once it leaves this surface, and what happens where it meets the lawn?
The answers tell you more about the finished result than any material sample will. Ask us the same questions.
Selection
Material and design considerations
Choose for the conditions first and appearance second. The field of options that survives the first filter is still wide.

Colour and heat
Lighter surfaces reflect more heat than darker ones, which is why pale tones dominate around pools here. No paved surface stays cool in direct afternoon sun, so where bare feet are involved, colour choice and shade are worth discussing in the same conversation.
Format and scale
Large-format units read calmer and suit contemporary elevations; smaller units suit intricate patterns and tighter, more traditional spaces. Scale should be judged against the size of the area — a large format in a small courtyard leaves awkward cuts at every edge.
Texture and slip
Surface texture is what governs grip when wet, and it matters most exactly where water is a certainty: pool surrounds, steps and any sloped section. Smoother finishes are easier to clean but need more thought in those locations.
Cuts and setting out
How a pattern is set out determines where the cuts land. Good setting-out puts full units in the visible field and small cuts against edges and walls, rather than leaving a row of slivers running through the middle of the space.
Layout
Patterns, and why driveways are different
Herringbone is the pattern most commonly specified for vehicle areas. Its interlocking geometry means a turning car's twisting force is transferred across neighbouring units rather than concentrated on one, which is why it is the conventional choice for driveways and vehicle crossings.
Running bond — offset rows, like brickwork — is simple, calm and economical to lay. It suits patios, walkways and larger formats where the pattern should recede rather than assert itself.
Stack bond, with joints aligned in both directions, is the most contemporary-looking and the least interlocked. It reads well in modern schemes on lightly loaded surfaces, and it is unforgiving of setting-out error, since every joint line is visible the full length of the space.
Basketweave and modular blends mix unit sizes into a repeating field. They break up large areas and carry a more traditional character, at the cost of a more involved lay and more cutting at edges.
Borders and soldier courses — a perimeter run of units laid perpendicular to the field — are worth considering on almost any surface. They frame the area, tidy the edge condition, and give the cuts somewhere sensible to land.

The installation, stage by stage
What actually happens on site, in order, from the first visit to the last pass of the compactor.

Site visit and measure
Measuring the area, reading the existing falls, checking what is already in the ground and identifying where water currently goes — including any place it currently goes wrong.

Layout and material selection
Setting out the pattern so cuts land sensibly, fixing finished levels against thresholds and adjoining surfaces, and choosing the material against the conditions of that specific area.

Excavation
Digging out to the depth the application requires, removing spoil, and preparing the formation the base will be built on.

Base and compaction
Aggregate laid and compacted in layers to build a uniformly dense platform, with falls formed into the base rather than corrected later in the bedding.

Laying and edge restraint
Bedding screeded, units laid to the set-out pattern, cuts made at the perimeter, and edge restraint fixed so the field is held against spreading.

Jointing and clean-down
Joint sand swept in and vibrated home to lock the surface, then the area washed down, spoil removed and the site left clean.

Maintenance considerations
Routine rather than demanding — but not zero, and worth knowing before you choose a surface.
Joint sand
Joints gradually lose sand to heavy rain, pressure washing and general use. Topping them up periodically keeps the surface interlocked. Letting joints empty is how a stable field slowly becomes a loose one.
Cleaning
Sweeping and washing handle most of it. Pressure washing works but should be used with care and at sensible distance, since an aggressive pass strips joint sand faster than anything else and can mark softer materials.
Stains
Oil, rust, leaf tannin and barbecue spills all respond better to prompt attention than to patience. Porous materials such as travertine behave differently from dense ones, so the right approach depends on what was installed.
Sealing
Optional, and genuinely a matter of preference. Sealers change appearance — often deepening colour — offer some stain resistance, and need reapplying periodically. Plenty of well-maintained paver surfaces are never sealed at all.
Efflorescence
A whitish haze that can appear on new concrete pavers as natural salts migrate to the surface. It is a characteristic of cement-based products rather than a fault, it typically fades with weathering, and specific cleaners exist for it.
Replacing individual units
One practical advantage over poured concrete: a damaged or badly stained paver can generally be lifted and swapped without disturbing the rest of the field. Keeping a few spares from the original batch is worth doing.
Planting and edges
Roots are patient and paving is not. Tree and shrub placement near a paved area is worth thinking about at the design stage rather than discovering later, because root growth beneath an edge is one of the few things that will lift a properly built surface.
Common questions
Paver questions we are asked most
Why do some paver surfaces sink or go uneven?
Almost always the base rather than the paver. If the sub-base was too shallow for the load, not compacted in layers, or laid over ground that was not properly prepared, the surface settles unevenly as the material below consolidates. Missing or failed edge restraint causes the related problem of spreading, where outer courses creep outward and joints open. Both are base and detailing issues — which is why the invisible half of the job is where the money should go.
Can pavers be laid over an existing concrete slab?
Sometimes, using an overlay method, but it depends entirely on the slab. It has to be sound, stable and free of significant movement or cracking, and the added height has to work with thresholds, drainage falls and any adjoining surface. Where a slab is already moving, overlaying it simply transfers that movement to the new surface. Whether it is viable on your property is assessed on site.
Which paver material stays coolest underfoot?
Lighter colours reflect more heat than dark ones, and travertine is commonly chosen around pools for how it behaves in bare feet. That said, no paved surface stays cool in direct South Florida sun through the afternoon, and any claim otherwise is worth treating carefully. Colour, material and how much shade the area gets all contribute — which is why surface choice and shade are usually discussed together.
What pattern is used for driveways?
